MAKKAH, June 6 (Bernama) -- More than 50 days spent in the Holy Land covering the 2026 haj season revealed a simple yet powerful reality: haj is not merely a journey to fulfil Islam’s fifth pillar, but an experience that profoundly shapes the hearts and lives of those who undertake it.

Throughout the pilgrimage, from the arrival of Malaysia’s duyufurrahman (guests of Allah) to their departure for home, countless moments of devotion, resilience and gratitude served as reminders of the extraordinary nature of this sacred journey.

From those who patiently waited decades for their turn and diligently saved money from a young age, to elderly pilgrims who remained steadfast despite their frailty, each person demonstrated remarkable determination to fulfil this lifelong dream.

One of the most moving moments observed by the writer was seeing millions of pilgrims, dressed in the simple attire of ihram with no distinctions of rank, profession, or background, gathered together in Arafah as servants of Allah, carrying the same prayers, hopes, and aspirations.

Although pilgrims faced numerous challenges throughout their haj journey - including intense heat, exhaustion, and the logistical demands of moving millions of people within a short period - their willingness to remain patient and help one another was evident throughout.

The smooth management of Malaysia’s haj operations was also greatly supported by the unwavering commitment of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) personnel, who worked tirelessly to ensure the welfare, health and religious needs of pilgrims were well taken care of throughout the pilgrimage.

For many pilgrims, the presence of these dedicated personnel provided reassurance, knowing that help was always available whenever needed.

Following the completion of the peak haj rituals, a noticeable transformation could be seen among the pilgrims. The anxiety and uncertainty that had accompanied many upon their arrival gradually gave way to a sense of calm and contentment that was clearly reflected on their faces.

Many pilgrims shared that their experience in the Holy Land had taught them to better appreciate the blessings of good health, family and the gift of time - things that are often taken for granted in the routines of daily life back home.

As the final days before departure drew near, Masjid al-Haram remained filled with worshippers eager to make the most of their remaining time in the Holy Land by increasing their acts of worship and devotion.

Whether spending hours reciting the Quran, performing voluntary tawaf, or simply gazing at the Kaaba with tears in their eyes, pilgrims sought to make the most of every precious moment.

The reality is that leaving Makkah is never easy for most pilgrims. This blessed land bears witness to their heartfelt prayers, tears and hopes, leaving behind memories that are difficult to erase.

More importantly, haj is not merely a physical journey. It is a profound spiritual school that teaches the human soul the meaning of patience in the face of trials, gratitude for every blessing, and a deeper understanding of one’s true place as a servant of Allah.

It is therefore unsurprising that many pilgrims bid farewell to Makkah with tears in their eyes, overwhelmed by emotion as they prepare to return home.

For haj is not simply a journey to be remembered, but a process of personal transformation whose lessons and impact continue to flourish in the heart long after the pilgrimage has ended.
