KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- State leaders have paid tribute to media practitioners in conjunction with National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2026, recognising their role in delivering accurate and credible information while helping to build a well-informed society.

The appreciation was extended to all media personnel, including journalists, photographers, cameramen, editors, production crews and behind-the-scenes workers in the media industry.

In TERENGGANU, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said journalism rooted in integrity was becoming increasingly important in today's fast-paced environment marked by an overwhelming flow of information.

He said factual accuracy, ethical reporting and the courage to uphold the truth must continue to be preserved for the benefit of the people and the nation.

“Behind every news report that reaches the public, there are individuals who work tirelessly, go into the field, verify facts and deliver information responsibly.

“Journalists are not merely news reporters, but also among the key pillars in building a society that is well-informed, mature in its thinking and able to understand current realities in a fair and balanced manner,” he said in a Facebook post.

In PAHANG, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail described the media as an important bridge between the people and the government, as well as a platform that conveys the issues, aspirations and concerns of the rakyat.

“May media practitioners continue to remain steadfast in carrying out their responsibilities to strengthen unity, preserve harmony and drive national development,” he said, while expressing appreciation for their dedication, courage and commitment in delivering credible information to the public.

Meanwhile, in PERLIS, Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said the state government greatly valued the services and sacrifices of journalists who continue to provide timely and accurate information despite the challenges they face.

“On behalf of the Perlis state government, I would like to wish all journalists across the country a Happy National Journalists' Day,” he said.

Introduced in 2018, HAWANA recognises the contributions of journalists to national development, with May 29 chosen to commemorate the first publication of Utusan Melayu in 1939.

HAWANA 2026 carries the theme “Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility”. The main celebration, to be held in Penang on June 20, will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In MELAKA, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh described the media as the backbone of information dissemination and a vital link between the government and the people.

He said this year’s HAWANA theme was timely in elevating the role of journalism in shaping a mature and well-informed society, while highlighting the importance of integrity in reporting to maintain public trust.

“Media practitioners are not merely news reporters, but also serve as a bridge between the government and the people in conveying policies, aspirations and state development in a transparent and effective manner,” he said in a Facebook post.

Ab Rauf also expressed appreciation for the dedication and sacrifices of media personnel in ensuring accurate news reaches the public.

“May all media practitioners continue to be blessed with the strength, wisdom and determination to uphold ethical and principled journalism,” he said.

Meanwhile, in PERAK, State Communications, Multimedia and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi said HAWANA symbolises recognition for media personnel who work tirelessly to ensure the public receives accurate and timely news.

In a Facebook post, he said the profession demands a high level of dedication and social responsibility, with many willing to work regardless of time and circumstances.

“In the spirit of HAWANA 2026, let us continue to strengthen the culture of knowledge, expand healthy dialogue and uphold the principles of truth and justice in every dissemination of information.

“To all media practitioners in Perak and across Malaysia, know that your contributions and sacrifices are always appreciated. Your role may not always be visible, but its impact is significant in shaping public thinking and the direction of the nation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said journalism would continue to be respected and remain an important pillar in building a knowledgeable and informed society.

In a Facebook post today, he expressed appreciation to media practitioners for their dedication in delivering accurate and credible information despite the challenges faced in the field.

“Behind every news report we read are individuals who go into the field, pursue facts and verify information to ensure the public receives reliable news. Happy National Journalists’ Day 2026,” he said.

In SABAH, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor described the media as an important bridge between the government and the people.

In conjunction with HAWANA 2026, he said the dedication, integrity and commitment shown by journalists help ensure the public receives accurate, reliable and balanced information.

“The HAWANA 2026 theme, Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility, is highly relevant in strengthening public confidence in ethical and responsible journalism,” he said in a statement today.

Hajiji also expressed appreciation for the contributions and sacrifices of media personnel in supporting the state's development and the well-being of its people.

In NEGERI SEMBILAN, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun conveyed HAWANA greetings and appreciation to media practitioners across the country.

He said journalists play an important role in ensuring the public continues to receive accurate and trustworthy information.

“May journalism continue to be respected, strengthened and serve as a voice for truth for the benefit of society and the nation,” he said in a Facebook post.
