Trump Says Iran's Enriched Uranium Will Be Destroyed

26/05/2026 10:05 AM

WASHINGTON, May 26 (Bernama-dpa) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump on Monday said Iran's enriched uranium will either be sent to the US for destruction or destroyed elsewhere, as negotiations continue on a framework agreement to end the conflict with Iran, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The enriched uranium would either be "immediately" handed over to the US and destroyed there, or destroyed in place or at another acceptable location in coordination with Tehran, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Trump said the process should be witnessed by the "Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent."

It was initially unclear whether he meant a US agency or possibly the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), based in Vienna.

It also remained unclear whether Trump was describing the current state of negotiations, a US demand in the talks, or a point that had already been agreed as part of a possible deal.

The future of Tehran's stockpile of around 400 kilogrammes of highly enriched uranium is a key sticking point in the negotiations.

On Saturday, Trump said a framework agreement had been "largely" negotiated.

Israel and the US jointly launched strikes against Iran on Feb 28.
