KUALA LUMPUR, May 23 (Bernama) -- The welfare and future of gig workers continue to be a priority for the government through the implementation of various new initiatives focusing on social protection, skills enhancement and career development opportunities.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said among the initiatives being implemented by the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) is the Progressive Acceleration for Capability and Employment (PACE) Economic Resilience Package, with an allocation of RM20 million to help strengthen workers’ economic resilience.
“In addition, the RM110 million MyMahir Artificial Intelligence (AI) programme, which provides exposure to technology-related and AI skills, reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of gig workers, including e-hailing drivers and p-hailing riders,” he said.
He said this in his speech at the Grab partners’ appreciation ceremony, which brought together nearly 1,000 drivers and delivery partners from the Sungai Buloh parliamentary constituency today.
Ramanan said gig workers also have the opportunity to undergo technical training through the Advanced Technology Training Centre (ADTEC) under the Manpower Department, and utilise the MYFutureJobs platform by the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) to access broader employment opportunities and career advancement opportunities.
Meanwhile, he said an e-aduan portal for gig workers has also been established to facilitate access to information on employment rights, social protection and complaint channels in a more systematic manner.
He said the development of the gig sector must be collectively driven by the government, platform providers and the workers themselves to ensure a more stable, inclusive and sustainable employment ecosystem in the long term.
At the event, Ramanan also presented tokens of appreciation to Grab partners in recognition of their dedication and contributions to facilitating the people’s daily needs.
