KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 (Bernama) -- National Cooperative Movement of Malaysia (ANGKASA) will continue to drive the nation’s cooperative movement in strategic and high-impact sectors to position it as one of the people’s economic forces.
ANGKASA president Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Fattah Abdullah said the sectors include food security, digital technology, green energy, logistics, education, healthcare, tourism and community development.
He said the move is in line with ANGKASA’s commitment to continue strengthening the competitiveness of cooperatives so that they are not merely seen as complements to the national economy, but as key players shaping the people’s economy in Malaysia.
He said this in a statement issued in conjunction with ANGKASA’s 55th anniversary celebration, held at the ANGKASA Auditorium, Wisma Ungku A. Aziz, Kelana Jaya, yesterday.
Regarding the celebration, he said it symbolised ANGKASA’s long journey as the apex body of the national cooperative movement since its establishment on May 12, 1971, following a resolution passed at the Second Malaysian Cooperative Congress which finalised the formation of a parent organisation to unite cooperatives nationwide.
Abdul Fattah said the history of the national cooperative movement began in 1922 when the first Cooperative Law was introduced in Malaya, before the establishment of ANGKASA as the institution coordinating and strengthening the country’s entire cooperative ecosystem.
“The establishment of ANGKASA symbolises the unity of the national cooperative movement, built upon the spirit of togetherness, wellbeing and inclusive as well as sustainable economic development for the people,” he said.
He said the government’s official recognition of ANGKASA in 1996 through gazettement as the body representing the Malaysian cooperative movement at both national and international levels had strengthened its position in policy development, international networking and cooperative business development.
At the same time, he said ANGKASA continues to expand globally through active involvement in various international cooperative organisations including the ASEAN Co-operative Organisation (ACO) and the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).
The celebration was further enlivened by the presence of International Cooperative Alliance Asia and Pacific (ICA-AP) regional director Balasubramaniam Iyer, symbolising the close relationship and continuous cooperation between ANGKASA and the international cooperative movement in empowering cooperative development in the Asia-Pacific region.
In conjunction with its 55th anniversary celebration, ANGKASA also introduced the ANGKASA Core Values Book as a guide to work culture and organisational ethics for all its personnel.
The book highlights the core values of Sadik, Amanah and Telus as the pillars of ANGKASA’s integrity, alongside the values of Fatanah, Adab, Integrity, Synergy, Excellence, Sustainability, Harmony and Innovation as drivers of operational excellence.
The 55th anniversary celebration also served as a platform for reflecting on ANGKASA’s achievements while acting as a catalyst to strengthen unity, innovation and sustainability within the national cooperative movement.
