PUTRAJAYA, May 11 (Bernama) -- The new secretary-general of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim officially began his duties today, marking a new chapter in the ministry’s administrative leadership.

He replaces Datuk Dr Anesee Ibrahim, who went on mandatory retirement on May 9, after completing his service in strengthening the country’s higher education agenda.

Aminuddin was welcomed by MOHE’s deputy secretary-general (Policy) Ahmad Rizal Adnan, who also began his duties today, together with the ministry’s top management team.

“He later clocked in as a symbolic gesture, marking the official start of his duties as the administrative head of MOHE,” the MOHE said in a statement.

Previously, Aminuddin served as secretary-general of the Ministry of Education (MOE), bringing with him extensive experience in ensuring continuity in the country’s talent development, from basic to higher education.

“That experience is highly significant in ensuring that graduates produced by public and private higher education institutions are of higher quality, more competitive and aligned with the country’s development aspirations.

“Additionally, his experience at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) gives him a significant advantage in shaping the direction of university research and development, as well as strengthening the country’s innovation ecosystem.

The ministry said that Aminuddin had also held strategic positions as president of Putrajaya Corporation (PPj), and director-general of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), demonstrating broad and high-impact cross-sector leadership capabilities.

Aminuddin began his career as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in 1994, and had previously served at the National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN), the Public Service Department (PSD), the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities.

Academically, Aminuddin holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Economics and Environmental Management from York University, United Kingdom, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Warwick and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Central England, United Kingdom.

“The combination of his experience in education, innovation, research and public administration is expected to serve as a key catalyst in strengthening the implementation of the Malaysia Higher Education Blueprint 2026-2035,” MOHE said.

The ministry also expressed optimism that Aminuddin's leadership would drive the transformation of the country’s higher education sector, enhance graduate employability, and strengthen the competitiveness of Malaysian higher education institutions at the regional and global levels.
