MOSCOW, May 8 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have reached an agreement to ban AI apps that generate sexually explicit content, the European Commission said, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"The European Commission welcomes the political agreement reached today between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on simpler, innovation-friendly rules for artificial intelligence … The agreement also strengthens protection for citizens. It prohibits AI systems that generate non-consensual sexually explicit and intimate content or child sexual abuse material, such as AI ‘nudification' apps," the Commission said in a statement on Thursday.

The measures are part of the Digital Omnibus package of amendments to the Artificial Intelligence Act. Among other things, they aim to establish clear deadlines for the implementation of rules for critical AI systems and simplify requirements for businesses using AI technology, the statement added.

The European Parliament and the Council must now formally approve the agreement, after which the amendments will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. They will enter into force three days later.
