Kelar 2 WTP: Completion Expected In 2027; To Address Water Supply Shortage In Pasir Mas

PASIR MAS, May 7 (Bernama) -- The Kelar 2 Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which is expected to be completed by March 2027, will resolve the water supply issues in Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang, said Kelantan Public Works, Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin.

Izani said the project, which is now 39.24 per cent complete, has a production capacity of 25 million litres of water per day and can cover the current shortfall of around 15 million litres per day in Pasir Mas.

"The Kelar 1 WTP currently supplies 75 million litres of water per day, but Pasir Mas still faces a shortage of about 15 million litres per day. When the Kelar 2 WTP is completed, it will not only be able to meet current needs but also provide an excess of around 10 million litres per day," he said to reporters after conducting a working visit to the Kelar 2 WTP project site here.

Izani said the project implemented by the East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) also provides additional capacity to accommodate new developments in the Pasir Mas district.

It is said that Pasir Mas has approximately 36,300 user accounts and that there are still some areas facing low water pressure issues and supply disruptions, especially in the outskirts of the village.

"When this plant is fully operational in March 2027, all users in Pasir Mas are expected to receive a more sufficient water supply. The excess water capacity will also allow AKSB (Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd) to open new account applications for residents who have not yet received a water supply," he said.

Commenting further, he said the underground raw water source at the Kelar 2 WTP site is among the best in Kelantan because its manganese and iron content is low and it can be easily treated using the existing system.

In the same developments, Izani said the state government is now actively building new WTPs throughout Kelantan with 43 plants currently in operation, while more than 10 other projects, including tube well systems and river surface water sources, are under construction to ensure the water supply needs of the people continue to be met by 2030.
