PUTRAJAYA, April 30 (Bernama) -- The appointment of nine new members to the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) is set to enhance the integrity and efficiency of Malaysia’s competition justice system, ensuring fair and transparent handling of all appeals against the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC).

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said said that said that eight members are newly appointed to the panel, while one has been reappointed, with all appointments receiving the approval of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“I am confident that all CAT members will be able to carry out their responsibilities fairly and without fear or favour. I would also like to extend my best wishes to them, and may the tribunal continue to uphold its credibility as an important institution in the country’s competition landscape,” he said in a statement today.

Armizan said that since the CAT was established under the Competition Act 2010 (Act 712), which came into force on Jan 1, 2012, a total of 57 cases have been filed with the tribunal, of which 48 have been successfully resolved, while nine are still in the hearing process.

“For your information, on Feb 11, 2026, the CAT delivered its ruling on the chicken feed cartel case, with the hearing panel upholding the MyCC’s decision. This is the case with the highest penalty ever recorded by the CAT to date, amounting to RM415.5 million,” he said.

The CAT is a quasi-judicial body established under Section 44 of the Competition Act 2010 and has exclusive jurisdiction to hear appeals against decisions made by the MyCC under Sections 35 (orders), 39 (finding of no violation) and 40 (finding of violation) of Act 712.

The tribunal currently comprises 12 members, led by its president Datuk Mohd Arief Emran Arifin, a High Court Judge in Kuala Lumpur, while the remaining 11 members are experts in various fields, including trade, economics, law, accounting and consumer affairs.
