KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his condolences to the family of veteran actress Datuk Seri Maria Menado, or Maria Abdullah, 94, a popular film star of the 1950s, who passed away today.

In a Facebook post today, Fahmi described the late Maria Menado as not only an actress but also a cherished part of the country’s arts industry history and memory.

“Today we lost a prominent name in the Malay film industry, Datuk Seri Maria Menado, or Maria Abdullah, an actress who shone on the silver screen from the 1950s to the early 1960s.

“Her iconic performance in the 1957 film Pontianak not only became a phenomenon but also helped pave the way for the local horror genre we know today,” he said.

Fahmi said many grew up watching the late actress, adding that the aura she carried continues to resonate to this day.

“May all her contributions be accepted as lasting charity. Let us all pray that her soul be blessed and placed among the faithful,” he said.

Maria Menado died at 12.25 pm due to old age and will be laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim Cemetery after Asar prayers today.
