IPOH, April 29 (Bernama) -- The Perak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized a Class C local fishing vessel along with fishing equipment and marine produce worth over RM3 million during a patrol about 5.0 nautical miles southwest of the Muara Sungai Tiang, Manjung, yesterday.
Its director, Maritime Captain Mohamad Shukri Khotob, said four crew members, including an Indonesian skipper aged between 20 and 47, were also detained to assist in investigations.
He said the vessel was suspected of committing offences under the Fisheries Act 1985, and the case is also being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
“The arrest was carried out by Malaysian Maritime assets through patrols under operations namely Op Sayong 1/2018, Op Pintas 1/2021 and Op Tiris 4.0.
“All seized items, including an estimated 2,000 kilogrammes of mixed fish, were brought to the Marine Police Force (PPM) jetty in Kampung Acheh to be handed over to Perak Maritime investigating officers for further action,” he said in a statement today.
He said the MMEA would take firm action against any party that violates established laws, and urged those with information on offences at sea to channel it to the Perak State Maritime Operations Centre at 05-683 8737 or the emergency line 999.
