JAKARTA, April 24 (Bernama) -- Voters in Indonesia’s new capital, Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), are set to elect their own representatives for the first time in the 2029 general election, with authorities preparing to designate the area as a special electoral district.
General Elections Commission (KPU) Commissioner Iffa Rosita said that preparations are underway to update voter data and establish a special electoral district covering both the Regional Representative Council (DPD) and the House of Representatives (DPR).
“Going forward, there will be a special electoral district in IKN for the 2029 general election, so preparations are being carried out from now,” she said during a working visit to IKN on Friday, according to ANTARA News Agency.
Iffa said 2027 would mark the start of preparations for the 2029 election, with coordination between the KPU and the IKN Authority expected to intensify as plans for a special electoral district take shape.
“There will be elections for the DPD and DPR, so the KPU and the IKN Authority will work closely to update voter data specific to IKN.
“Once ready, a KPU office building will also be constructed here,” she said.
