KUALA NERANG, April 21 (Bernama) -- A harum manis mango farmer in Padang Terap here, who has been cultivating the crop for the past eight years, is enjoying his highest yield to date this season.
Zulkipli Hashim, 67, who tends to 300 harum manis trees in Kampung Padang Nyior, said the prolonged hot weather over the past few months has contributed to a more abundant and higher-quality harvest.
“Normally, the average yield is about one tonne per season, but since the first harvest on April 2, more than one tonne has already been picked for sale.
“I expect that nearly 30,000 fruits produced this season could amount to more than six tonnes in total,” he told Bernama when met at his orchard recently.
He said that apart from weather conditions, soil fertility also plays a key role in producing abundant and high-quality fruit.
Zulkipli said he obtained seedlings from Perlis, which is well known for harum manis production.
He said he also received guidance from various parties to ensure the crop’s success, after earlier attempts to cultivate sweet potato, limau langkat and rubber on the same land were unsuccessful.
“I found that the weather conditions in Padang Terap are not much different from Perlis, which has helped the harum manis crop thrive,” he said.
He added that the harum manis is sold at between RM20 and RM25 per kilogramme, and is also available via courier delivery to customers.
