Muhammad Ridwan Ruled Out Of 2026 Track Cycling World Cup With Shoulder Injury

NILAI, April 20 (Bernama) -- National cycling programme technical director John Beasley has confirmed that national men’s track cyclist Muhammad Ridwan Sahrom will miss the upcoming the 2026 Track Cycling World Cup after suffering a serious shoulder injury.

Beasley said Muhammad Ridwan sustained an acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury following a crash in the keirin event, with initial assessment indicating a grade three to grade four injury that may require surgery.

“Assessments show the injury is quite serious and he may need surgery, but we will wait for further evaluation from doctors at the National Sports Institute today.

“It will also take quite a long rehabilitation period to regain full strength, but it is not as bad as the knee injury suffered by the top cyclist previously,” he said at a press conference for the 2026 Track Cycling World Championships at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, here today.

Beasley said the coaching team will reassess the sprint line-up, including conducting several trials this week to determine the best combination.

“We will look at all possible scenarios, including reshuffling positions within the team. It’s a compromise, but we have to make the best decision,” he said.

On the impact of Muhammad Ridwan’s and Muhammad Shah Firdaus absence, he admitted the national sprint squad would be affected, but stressed that priority would be given to ensuring the rider makes a full recovery ahead of the Asian Games later this year.

Muhammad Ridwan sustained an injury following a crash during the Keirin event at the Track World Cup series in Hong Kong on Saturday.

Young national rider Adib Andhar Adnan is expected to be among the names considered to replace Muhammad Ridwan at the 2026 Track Cycling World Cup.

The 2026 Track Cycling World Cup will be held at the National Velodrome Malaysia in Nilai from April 24 to 26.
