GEORGE TOWN, April 19 (Bernama) -- More than 1,000 football fans flooded Padang Kota here to watch on mega screen the match between Sabah FC and Penang FC in conjunction with the second final of the 2025/2026 Challenge Cup at Likas Stadium, Sabah tonight.
The second leg action follows the first final involving Penang FC and Sabah FC at City Stadium, here in early April which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The event, which took place in a lively atmosphere, was also attended by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Mordi Bimol and Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) director Harry Chai Heng Hua, who spent time with the fans to watch the match and enliven the spirit of sportsmanship among the community.
Mordi, who was met, said the big screen display was organised by MSNPP in collaboration with Penang City Council (MBPP) as an initiative to bring together the local community as well as provide an opportunity for supporters to enjoy the match en masse in an atmosphere full of enthusiasm.
The programme is also to strengthen unity and foster a healthy lifestyle through leisure activities and support for football.
"According to the organisers, more than 1,000 fans flooded Padang Kota to watch the big screen and support the Penang FC team," he said
A visitor Mohamad Rozaini Mohd Ramli, 35, said he took the opportunity to bring his wife and two children to watch the second final match together.
He said he usually only brought his eight-year-old eldest son to City Stadium to watch the Penang FC football match, but tonight he brought all his family members.
"The windy weather and the spacious atmosphere in the Padang Kota area provided an interesting atmosphere for us to watch the final match tonight, like being in the stadium but more relaxed," he said, who works as a factory electrician.
The crowd that attended consisted of various age groups including families, youth and tourists, thus reflecting the deep interest of Malaysians in football.
The match witnessed thunderous cheers from Penang FC fans who filled the screening area, making the atmosphere feel like being in a real stadium.
