UTM Boosts Global Reputation In QS World University Rankings By Subject 2026

JOHOR BAHRU, March 26 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) continues to bolster its global academic reputation, with two of its subjects ranked among the world’s top 50 and four disciplines placed first nationally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

In a statement, UTM said Petroleum Engineering rose to 36th position from 46th previously, while Architecture and Built Environment advanced into the global top 50 from the 51-100 band.

The university said its overall performance reflects a promising upward trajectory across all broad subject areas, with Engineering and Technology improving to 86th position from 102nd previously, Natural Sciences to 197th (227), Social Sciences and Management to 209th (249), and Arts and Humanities to 257th (316).

UTM said these achievements reinforce its standing as a premier institution in engineering, science and technology.

It added that the university is now ranked first in Malaysia for Architecture and Built Environment, Mineral and Mining Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.

UTM also holds the second spot nationally for Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as the broad subject area of Engineering and Technology, while Petroleum Engineering is ranked third in Malaysia.

Several disciplines maintained strong global standings within the top 100, including Electrical and Electronic Engineering (77th), Chemical Engineering (83rd), Civil and Structural Engineering (51-100), and Mineral and Mining Engineering (51-100).

Meanwhile, other subject areas continued to improve within the global top 200, namely Computer Science and Information Systems (130th), Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering (117th), Chemistry (184th), Environmental Sciences (115th), and Materials Science (113th).

UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof Ts Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim said the achievements reflect the university’s unwavering commitment to strengthening academic excellence, high-impact research, and strategic collaborations with industry partners and international institutions.

He said the success was the result of the collective efforts of academicians, researchers, students, alumni and global collaborators, who remain dedicated to enhancing the quality of teaching, learning and research.

UTM said the accomplishment aligns with its UTM ASCEND 2030 aspirations to reinforce its position as a global technological university that drives innovation, research excellence and talent development in support of national development and global societal well-being.

It added that the university remains committed to advancing academic and research excellence in line with its vision of becoming a globally renowned technological university that delivers innovative and sustainable solutions to future challenges.
