KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 (Bernama) -- After enduring the painful experience of being bullied as a child for not being fluent in Bahasa Melayu, talented young singer Yazmin Aziz has turned those past wounds into a source of strength, propelling her music career onto the international stage.

Yazmin, 25, who is of Malay-Filipino parentage, said the hardships she once faced did not break her spirit. Instead, they shaped her into a braver, more authentic performer who pours deep emotion into her music.

She said the experience began when she returned to Malaysia from the Philippines at the age of 10 and had to adjust to a new school environment.

“At the time, I struggled in school because I was not fully fluent in Bahasa Melayu. As a result, I was bullied and mocked by my schoolmates, and some even became physically aggressive. It affected me deeply and there were times I dreaded going to school. But as I grew older, I learned to manage my emotions, and today I channel those experiences into my songs,” she told Bernama.

Determined to move forward, Yazmin, who has a degree in mass communication, now sees every challenge she faced as inspiration to create more honest music that’s relatable to listeners.

Recently, Yazmin drew attention after taking part in the Silk Way Star singing competition in Kazakhstan, an experience that has opened more opportunities for her to break into the international market.

“The programme had a huge impact on my career development. Many of my performance videos from the show went viral on TikTok, and it helped more Malaysians recognise my talent and capabilities.

“I’m also receiving offers to perform abroad now, including from Singapore, the Philippines and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The opportunity to expand globally is huge right now, and I want people to see that I can perform not just in one language but in several, including Malay, English and Tagalog,” she said.

Yazmin is also active in producing creative content, including comedy videos, on social media platforms such as TikTok.

“Even though I’m busy performing overseas now, it hasn’t diminished my passion for creating social media content or acting. I’m always open to offers, especially in acting,” she said, noting that she had previously turned down several opportunities to focus on her studies.

Sharing details about her latest single ‘Nagpalinlang’, which is performed in Tagalog, Yazmin said the song explores the theme of heartbreak in relationships, something many listeners can relate to.

“I’ve received many private messages from people sharing their own experiences after listening to the song. Although I’m currently producing many songs in Tagalog, I’m still open to creating music in English and Malay as well,” she said.

Yazmin also emphasised that, in an increasingly competitive music industry, authenticity remains the foundation of her artistic identity.

“Many artistes follow singing trends, but I want my voice to remain original. When I sing, I want people to truly feel my soul,” she said.
