TENOM, March 3 (Bernama) -- A Tenom-Pangi train suffered brake failure and crashed into four motorcycle-trolleys left on the tracks at Batu 11, Pangi, here today, injuring one passenger.
Tenom district police chief Supt Azmir Abd Razak said the accident happened at about 8 am.
It is understood that residents had parked the motorcycle-trolleys on the tracks.
He said floods and landslides along the Tenom-Pangi railway line had limited the train service to Batu 11 only, forcing residents living farther away to either travel by motorcycle-trolley or on foot.
“Unfortunately, due to brake failure that had been detected earlier before reaching the location, the train carrying several passengers derailed and hit four motorcycles, resulting in a man sustaining minor injuries,” he told Bernama.
Azmir advised the Sabah State Railways Department to always ensure that trains are in proper condition before operating on the tracks.
“Residents are also advised not to use motorcycle-trolleys on the same tracks used by train services, although we understand they have no alternative as there are no road links there,” he said.
Earlier, a 30-second video went viral on social media showing several passengers on the train in a state of panic as it was moving at high speed.
