KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 (Bernama) -- The government strongly condemned the action of an individual who uploaded content showing the desecration and stepping on the Quran on the social media platform Threads, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.
In a Facebook post, Fahmi, who is also spokesperson for the Unity Government, described the act as crude, insulting to Islam and a provocation against the sensitivities and harmony of Malaysia’s multiracial society.
“I have directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to carry out an immediate investigation and take action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said.
Fahmi said the MCMC would also coordinate with the Royal Malaysia Police to ensure comprehensive and uncompromising action under existing laws.
“Any act that touches on religious sensitivities and threatens public order is truly unacceptable,” he said.
Pahang Police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman confirmed that a student of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) has been detained on suspicion of uploading content insulting Islam on social media, which has been going viral since yesterday.
The suspect is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or services to transmit communications that are offensive, abusive, threatening, or harassing to others, including obscene content.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir gave assurance that the matter would be resolved swiftly, noting that the incident had caused concern, particularly during the month of Ramadan.
He urged the public to remain calm and refrain from taking any action against the student.
“Such discourteous acts must be addressed immediately. We are taking prompt steps to ensure the matter is not manipulated by any party seeking to worsen the situation,” he said
Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan stressed that the department viewed the incident seriously and was closely monitoring developments.
“All parties are urged to preserve the harmony we have built over the years, without compromising with any extremist elements seeking to disrupt peace in Malaysia,” he said in a statement.
