BANGKOK, Feb 18 (Bernama) — Muslims in Thailand will begin fasting on Thursday (Feb 19), according to a statement from the Office of the Sheikhul Islam of Thailand on Wednesday.

The Sheikhul Islam of Thailand, Arun Boonchom, stated that Thailand has designated today (Feb 18) for the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon at several locations across the southern provinces.

"The date of 1 Ramadan, which falls on February 19, was determined after the crescent moon was sighted in the Yaha district of Yala province," he said while making the announcement at the Office of the Sheikhul Islam in Bangkok via a live broadcast on NBT television on Wednesday.

Thailand is estimated to have approximately 10 million Muslims, who continue to play a vital role in shaping a harmonious and multicultural society in the country."
