Fire At Oil Refinery Contained Amid Worsening Fuel Shortage In Cuba

ISTANBUL, Feb 14 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- A blaze at an oil refinery in Cuba was swiftly contained as the island grapples with a worsening fuel shortage, the Energy Ministry said Friday, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.

Black smoke was seen billowing from the Nico Lopez Refinery in Havana.

“The workday at the Nico Lopez Refinery continues with complete normalcy,” the ministry wrote on the US social media X.

It added that the fire was quickly brought under control, did not spread and was confined only to a warehouse containing disused products.

There were no injuries, and an investigation continues to determine the cause, it added.

Cuba’s fuel crisis has worsened after the US cut off oil supplies from long-time ally Venezuela, which had been shipping tens of thousands of barrels daily to the island.

The disruption followed a US operation that captured former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the seizure of oil tankers, effectively halting key fuel deliveries.
