PARIS, Feb 14 (Bernama-dpa) -- A 50-year-old woman from a village in eastern France was arrested near Paris in connection with the discovery of two dead newborns in a freezer, officials said on Friday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
The public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the deaths of the minors after the woman told authorities she had given birth to the babies several years ago.
The two frozen bodies were discovered on Tuesday in her home in Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont, situated between Strasbourg and Dijon.
According to the public prosecutor’s office, she admitted giving birth to the children at home and hiding the pregnancies. She said she had “wrapped the babies immediately after birth” and placed them in the freezer in the utility room, which she used alone.
The mother, who French media report has nine other children, said the births occurred between 2011 – the year her previous child was born – and 2018.
A family member discovered the bodies after the woman left the house in December. The woman had no previous criminal record, according to reports.
It was initially unclear when the infants had been placed in the freezer. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the precise time and circumstances of their deaths.
