Tandop Hawker Site Upgrade Benefits 74 Traders

ALOR SETAR, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- The upgrade project for the Tandop Hawker Site here, carried out by the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, will benefit 74 daily traders, including those operating during Ramadan.

Co-chair of the Kedah State Development Action Council, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, said Alor Setar Mayor requested the hawker site upgrade at the end of 2025.

“The Mayor of Alor Setar (Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya) aims to reopen the site as the Tandop Ramadan Bazaar during this year’s fasting month, expected to start on Feb 19.

“The Kedah State Federal Development Office was appointed to implement the upgrade, completing the project with a total allocation of RM200,000,” he said at the handover ceremony for roadside and related works in the Tandop Baru Industrial Area yesterday.

Saifuddin Nasution, who is also the Home Minister, said the upgrade includes a 170-metre-long, six-metre-wide concrete floor and related works to create a stable, safe, and organised hawker site.

He said the hawker site will serve daily traders, 171-night market vendors (every Tuesday), and 130 Ramadan bazaar stalls, adding that the project aims to enhance facilities and comfort for traders and the public, supporting a cleaner, more organised, and welcoming hawker environment.

He said Tandop is a strategic economic hub in Kedah, with commercial and retail areas, highway access, housing, light industry, and trade, attracting small traders who steadily grow their businesses.
