Exam Season Inappropriate For Any Form Of Assembly - UMT MPP

KUALA NERUS, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Terengganu's Student Representative Council (UMT MPP) emphasised that the implementation of any form of assembly or street confrontation during the examination season is inappropriate following the proposal to organise an assembly or open demonstration regarding the repeal of the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU).

It said that the examination season is more suitable for focusing on learning, and not for organising any activities that could cause emotional stress, disrupt the campus environment, or undermine a conducive learning atmosphere.

"The importance of academics and student welfare must be prioritised during this critical period. The examination season is a crucial phase that requires students to fully focus on their academic matters.

"Therefore, any planned large-scale gatherings during this period should not be held as they have the potential to disrupt the focus, tranquility, and well-being of students," according to the statement.

The statement said that the UMT MPP also believes that the gathering has the potential to undermine students' academic performance and emotional balance.

The statement also said that consideration of time and the current situation is very important to ensure that students' welfare is not affected.

"At the same time, the UMT MPP also encourages the views and aspirations of students be channelled through a more prudent approach that is appropriate to the current situation, especially respecting the examination season as a period that should be fully prioritised for academics," the statement said.

According to the statement, the UMT MPP will continue to be committed to safeguarding the welfare and well-being of UMT students, as well as ensuring that the academic interests of students are always a priority.

In this regard, the UMT MPP calls on all students to consider the timing and current circumstances rationally, particularly by recognising that the examination season is not an appropriate period for any form of gathering or street confrontation.

Previously, the media reported that a group of students would march from Taman Tugu to Parliament on Feb 9 to demand the repeal of the AUKU.

The demonstration scheduled for 9 am will involve more than 30 student groups, including Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY), Himpunan Advokasi Rakyat Malaysia and Liga Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya (LMUM).
