Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Strikes Off Pacitan, Injures Seven

JAKARTA, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Pacitan, East Java, early Friday, injuring at least seven people and damaging several houses in parts of East Java and Yogyakarta.

Head of the Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre at Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Abdul Muhari, said the earthquake occured at 1.06 am local time, with its epicentre located in the sea at a depth of 10 kilometres, about 90 kilometres southeast of Pacitan. 

“The tremor was also felt in surrounding areas, including Trenggalek, Gunungkidul, Bantul and Yogyakarta,” he said in a statement, adding that there were no tsunami threats.

Abdul Muhari said the quake was felt strongly for two to three seconds, triggering panic among residents, with initial reports showing at least four households were affected.

He said local disaster management agencies (BPBD) had been deployed to monitor the situation and carry out rapid assessments, while residents have been advised to remain calm, stay alert for possible aftershocks and avoid damaged structures.
