SIBU, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- The incident that claimed the lives of three children in Sibu Jaya yesterday afternoon occurred within an area undergoing development.
The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) said in a statement today that the matter is currently under the purview of the relevant authorities, who are conducting investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
SRDC said it would extend full cooperation to all the relevant agencies and stakeholders involved.
“The council remains committed to working with all responsible parties to enhance public safety awareness and strengthen preventive measures, particularly in areas that may pose potential risks,” it said.
The council also reminded members of the public to exercise caution and ensure that children are properly supervised at all times, especially near construction sites, water bodies and other hazardous areas.
SRDC said it was deeply saddened by the tragic incident and extended its condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected.
It added that the council understood the concern and sorrow felt by the community and called for compassion, sensitivity and respect for the affected families while investigations are ongoing.
In the incident, three children, including two siblings, drowned after they were believed to have fallen into a sewage pond near Sibu Jaya Flats.
The victims were identified as Macx Devdynne Sharie Merdeka, 12; her younger brother, Macx Welwait Merdeka, nine; and their neighbour, Daniella Arissa Tayas Maringgai, 10.
