KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- The Secretariat House of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD), built at a cost of RM790,930, was completed here on Jan 10 after construction began on July 15 last year.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the facility underscores Malaysia’s role as host of the AFPPD Secretariat, which will relocate from Japan to Kuala Lumpur, making Malaysia the organisation’s Asia-Pacific operational hub for at least five years.

“This selection reflects international recognition of Malaysia’s active role in advancing sustainable development, gender equality, health rights, youth empowerment and population issues,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Nanta, who is also chairman of AFPPD Malaysia, expressed appreciation to the AFPPD team and said the Secretariat House symbolises continued regional trust and cooperation.

Malaysia was selected as host for the AFPPD Secretariat during the forum’s 15th General Assembly held in Kuala Lumpur in April last year.

Established in 1981, AFPPD is a network of 30 national committees comprising parliamentarians, focused on promoting parliamentary engagement in addressing population and development issues across the Asia-Pacific region.
