JAKARTA, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- Melaka has reaffirmed its commitment to expedite the development of a port that will serve roll-on roll-off (RoRo) ferry services between the state and Dumai in Indonesia, according to the Consulate General of Indonesia in Johor Bahru.
The consulate said the commitment was conveyed during a meeting in Melaka between a consulate delegation led by Consul-General Sigit S. Widiyanto and a Melaka State Government delegation headed by Melaka State Economic Planning Unit Secretary Datuk Shamsul Ambia Abdul Aziz, on Monday.
“The Melaka state government welcomed the visit and reaffirmed its commitment to continue cross-border connectivity projects linking Malaysia and Indonesia via the Strait of Malacca,” the consulate posted in its social media on Tuesday.
The meeting was also attended by the Melaka State Town and Country Planning Department (PLANMalaysia Melaka), the Melaka Port Authority, Melaka Corporation (MCORP), and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka.
The Melaka-Dumai service was proposed by Sigit on Aug 27, 2025, during which he said the route would, among others, complement the Jiran Istimewa (JIWA) programme, which provides privileges for residents of Johor and the Riau Islands, as well as Melaka and Riau.
He said that, so far, 134 tourism industry players from the four regions have joined JIWA, a special border treatment initiative to boost cross-border tourism promotion in the border areas of southern Peninsular Malaysia
