KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 20 (Bernama) -- HELP University has conducted comprehensive safety checks across its campuses and appointed independent consultants following the fatal incident at its Bukit Damansara campus on Jan 12, as authorities continue their investigations.

The university in a statement today said it is providing full cooperation to the police and the Fire and Rescue Department as they carry out investigations to determine the cause of the incident.

“HELP University remains highly committed to uncovering the cause of the tragic incident on Jan 12, 2026 at one of our buildings in our Bukit Damansara campus.

“In our 40-year history, there has never been an incident that has led to a loss of life in any of our campuses before this tragic incident and we are taking all actions possible to ensure that this will never happen again,” it said.

According to the statement, while the authorities have yet to release their full findings, the university said initial indications suggest the explosion originated in the compressor room, which is part of the affected building’s centralised air-conditioning system.

HELP University said that the centralised air-conditioning system is not managed directly by the university but falls under the management of Amanahraya REIT, the building owner.

“Additionally, HELP University has engaged Forensic Services Malaysia, an independent forensic consultant, to help identify the cause of the incident.

“This forensic investigation is commissioned as part of the university’s standard operating procedures and policies, and the results of the investigations will be shared with all students, staff and other stakeholders once it is completed,” it said.

The statement said that as part of its immediate response, HELP University conducted safety checks on the air-conditioning systems in all unaffected buildings at its Bukit Damansara and Subang Bestari campuses, with the inspections completed on Jan 13, confirming that the systems are safe for operations.

It said for the affected building at the Bukit Damansara campus, the university said Amanahraya REIT has appointed independent engineering consultant CHT International to conduct a comprehensive risk and safety assessment.

The building will remain closed until it is certified safe, with all classes at the campus currently conducted online, according to the statement.

It stated although the Subang Bestari campus was not affected by the incident and remains compliant with regulatory and safety requirements, the university said CHT International has also been appointed to carry out a precautionary assessment of mechanical and electrical systems there.

HELP University reiterated that the safety, health and wellbeing of its students and staff remain its top priority while ensuring continuity of learning.
