Kelantan Records 19.5 Pct Decline In Index Crime

18/01/2026 03:58 PM

KOTA BHARU, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Index crime in Kelantan fell by 19.5 per cent last year, dropping from 2,296 cases in 2024 to 1,848, driven largely by a 24.3 per cent reduction in property crime, from 1,873 cases to 1,418.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the property crime category saw fewer thefts (down from 732 to 647) and a sharp 39.7 per cent drop in vehicle theft (from 68 to 41 cases).

Speaking at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters’ monthly assembly today, he noted, however, that violent crime remains a serious concern despite a slight increase of 1.7 per cent, from 423 cases to 430.

“Murder cases rose from four cases in 2024 to seven in 2025, while robbery without firearms increased by 25 per cent with 60 cases,” he said.

He reported 27,339 narcotics cases with 28,807 arrests last year, while the street value of seized drugs fell sharply by 60 per cent, from RM73.52 million in 2024 to RM29.56 million.

Mohd Yusoff highlighted a concerning rise in commercial crime last year, involving phone scams, e-commerce fraud, non-existent loans, online investments, and fake part-time job offers.

The figure nearly doubled from 1,095 to 2,010, despite a reduction in total financial losses, which fell to RM50.09 million.

Separately, he announced that state authorities will resume the demolition of 71 remaining illegal jetties along Sungai Golok near the Malaysia-Thailand border on Sunday, with completion targeted for March.

"This operation will target the remaining structures still standing after the initial demolition phase. Due to the challenging geography of the river and narrow land access, the demolition will proceed from the waterway first," he explained.

He noted that there are 223 illegal jetties along the border from Tumpat to Jeli, with 216 built on government land and seven on private property.

Regarding a recent accident in Bachok where a four-year-old girl was seriously injured by a Fire and Rescue Department MPV, he confirmed that police have received three reports and will summon all relevant individuals to assist the investigation.

“We have also recorded the statement of the driver involved. A comprehensive investigation is in progress under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

On Jan 3 at approximately 10.45 am, four-year-old Nurul Afia Raisha Muhamad Shamsul was seriously injured after being struck by a reversing Fire and Rescue Department MPV during a department Family Day event at a resort in Bachok.

The girl sustained severe abdominal injuries and fractures to her right shoulder, collarbone and ribs.

She is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian.
