PORT DICKSON, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has disbursed RM93,600 to 49 fishermen from the Telok Kemang and Port Dickson Fishermen’s Associations (PNK) affected by natural disasters last year.
LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said 32 of the recipients were hit by Storm Senyar on Nov 27, while the others received aid following deaths, damage to homes, fishing equipment and vessels, as well as land and sea accidents.
“Each recipient received between RM500 and RM10,000, with the National Fishermen’s Association (NEKMAT) also contributing RM15,500 for storm victims,” he told reporters at the LKIM Natural Disaster and Fishermen’s Welfare Assistance handover programme here today.
The assistance scheme provides financial aid, goods or other support to fishermen affected by accidents or natural disasters.
Muhammad Faiz also advised fishermen to report any damage promptly to their associations or LKIM to ensure aid is delivered quickly.
On the fishermen’s subsistence allowance (ESHN), he said RM1.008 million will be disbursed this year to 280 fishermen, with 216 registered under the Port Dickson PNK and 64 under Telok Kemang PNK. Last year, 279 fishermen received RM1.004 million in total.
Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, who officiated the event, said the natural disaster assistance scheme is expected to ease the burden on the local fishing community, particularly those affected by damage and disasters.
