Penang Seeks To Strengthen Economic Ties With India

NEW DELHI, Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Penang has discussed strengthening trade, technology, and investment cooperation with India during Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo's visit, which began last Sunday.

On Thursday, Jagdeep met with India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada.

"Exchanged views on strengthening trade linkages, industrial cooperation, and investment opportunities. Reaffirmed commitment to deepening India-Malaysia economic engagement through sustained dialogue," Prasada said in a post on X.

The Penang deputy chief minister began his January 4 to 13 visit to India in Bengaluru, in the southern state of Karnataka.

During his stay, Jagdeep met Karnataka's deputy chief minister D.K. Shivakumar, minister of science and technology N.S. Boseraju, and minister of electronics and information technology Priyank Kharge.

Discussions focused on potential areas of cooperation in the technology sector, education opportunities, science parks and infrastructure development.

"Both sides agreed to identify focused collaboration opportunities in semiconductors, deeptech, space applications, smart cities and skilling, and to advance these through sustained engagement for long-term mutual benefit," Karnataka's Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Biotechnology said in a social media post.

Jagdeep also toured the campuses of Dr Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University and Sri Sairam College of Engineering during his stay in the Karnataka capital.

The Penang deputy chief minister will be in Amritsar, in the state of Punjab, for five days on a private trip starting on Friday.
