LABUAN, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- Labuan Corporation (LC) is refining and strengthening all tourism-driven programmes on the island in preparation for the national Visit Malaysia 2026, as it anticipates a rise in tourist arrivals in the federal territory.

Its chief executive officer, Mohd Sukuran Taib said the efforts are focused on ensuring the island is fully prepared to receive both domestic and international visitors, with improved coordination of events, attractions and supporting infrastructure.

He said tourism programmes are being streamlined to highlight Labuan’s strengths as a duty-free island, a marine and island-hopping destination, and a venue for sports, cultural and community-based events, while ensuring activities are well-scheduled and sustainably managed.

“Visit Malaysia 2026 presents a timely opportunity for Labuan to position itself more strongly on the tourism map.

“We will refine our programmes to ensure better visitor experience, stronger branding, and more consistent economic spillover to local communities and businesses,” he said to Bernama today.

Mohd Sukuran said Labuan Corporation, together with the Department of Federal Territories (JWP) is working closely with federal agencies, tourism players, event organisers and local stakeholders to enhance promotional strategies, upgrade facilities and ensure readiness across accommodation, transport and visitor services.

He also said that ongoing initiatives include the enhancement of signature festivals, eco-tourism and marine-based activities, as well as efforts to improve the island’s urban image, cleanliness and public amenities to meet visitor expectations.

Mohd Sukuran added that the expected increase in tourist arrivals under Visit Malaysia 2026 is also seen as a catalyst to stimulate the local economy, particularly for small and medium enterprises, artisans, and service providers involved in the tourism value chain.

He expressed confidence that with coordinated planning and continued stakeholder support, Labuan is well-placed to capitalise on the momentum generated by Visit Malaysia 2026 as well as to strengthen its role as a distinctive tourism destination in East Malaysia.
