KOTA BHARU, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Disabled Youth Council (MBOKU) intends to expand the establishment of one-stop centres nationwide as the main reference centre to assist and provide exposure on people with disability (PWD).
Its president, Ghazali Othman said that so far, the one-stop centre specifically for PWD is only available at Universiti Sains Malaysia Kubang Kerian Specialist Hospital, here.
He said the existence of the one-stop centre enables the public, government and private sector employers to obtain information regarding job opportunities, health treatment and assistance regarding criminal cases involving PWD.
"MBOKU will collaborate with state Disabled Councils and relevant ministries to establish one-stop centres nationwide as a medium for disseminating information to the community," he told reporters after the Disability Training Workshop Programme at Dewan Bakti, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Kota Bharu, here, today.
Ghazali said the initiative was important to ensure that PWD and the public had easy access to referral services, advice and information regarding their needs and support services near them.
He said the one-stop centre could also be used by employers, youth or individuals who have had accidents and are certified as PWD to obtain doctor referrals, treatment information and suitable job opportunities.
Meanwhile, Ghazali hoped that employers in this country would continue to open up job opportunities for PWD graduates after they complete their studies, in line with their respective qualifications and capabilities.
"We acknowledge that OKU graduates face challenges in finding jobs, but they have the skills and potential that can contribute to the country's economic development if given opportunities in the public and private sectors," he said.
