JAKARTA, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- The death toll from flash floods in Sitaro Islands, North of Sulawesi has climbed to 16, while three others were still feared missing as of Tuesday afternoon.
The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) in its latest update said 22 people were injured in the disaster and had been taken to nearby health facilities for treatment and two others were sent to health facilities in Manado to get further treatment.
At least 682 victims are displaced by the floods so far, BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Head Abdul Muhari said in a statement.
The flash flood, triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall, left roads covered with rocks and mud and inundated nearby residential areas.
BPNB said four districts were affected, namely East Siau, South East Siau, West Siau and South West Siau.
The flash floods also caused damage to properties, public infrastructures, and facilities.
Authorities are still assessing the losses.
In response to the disaster, the local government has declared a 14-day emergency period from Jan 5 to 18, 2026.
