KANGAR, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- The Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) has rolled out a pilot closed-circuit television (CCTV) project in Kangar Jaya and at the Perlis Sentral Terminal to enhance public safety and improve urban security.

MPK president Affendi Rajini Kanth said the project is funded by a RM300,000 allocation from the Home Affairs Ministry (KDN), involving the installation of nine CCTV units integrated with the Perlis Integrated Command Centre (PiCC) in Jejawi for centralised monitoring.

“The system will function as a one-stop monitoring centre, enabling authorities to track movements and respond swiftly to incidents in the two locations,” he told reporters after officiating the soft launch of the Kangar Jaya Mall, here today.

Affendi said the project also includes supporting infrastructure such as a communications network, public address speakers, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) emergency hotline signage and solar-powered LED streetlights to improve visibility, including in back lanes.

“With improved lighting and CCTV surveillance, the public will feel safer moving around at night, while incident recordings can be retained for investigation and reference,” he said.

He said the project is expected to be fully operational by next month following final testing by the end of this month, with 24-hour monitoring by appointed personnel.

Affendi added that MPK plans to expand the CCTV programme to other areas in Perlis, including Arau, Padang Besar and Kuala Perlis, if the Safe City initiative proves effective in Kangar.
