One-month Window For Talks As US Open To Malaysia’s Views On New Tariffs - Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia still has a one-month window to negotiate with the United States (US) regarding the newly announced reciprocal tariffs by Donald Trump’s administration, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister said that the matter was conveyed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a courtesy call in Parliament today.

Rubio assured that Malaysia’s views would be considered, given the country’s status as a key US trading partner in Southeast Asia.

“Rubio stated that the letter (from the United States government stating the imposition of the tariff) was general, but Malaysia still has about one month to negotiate. He also acknowledged that Malaysia is a major trading partner of the US in this region and will consider and present our views,” Anwar told reporters after the meeting.

The tariff issue was among the main matters raised, as it has a direct impact on the Malaysia-US bilateral trade and the broad regional economy.

The United States plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products exported to the country, effective August 1. This new tariff is in addition to existing sector-specific tariffs and is one percentage point higher than the rate announced in April.

Anwar also stressed that Malaysia would maintain a neutral foreign policy and would not bow to pressure to choose between major powers.

“The US still considers its relationship with Malaysia important and wants to not only maintain but also enhance cooperation with ASEAN. They understand our position to maintain friendly relations and trade with all nations.

“This is important because many believe Malaysia must choose sides. No. While the US is an important trading partner, we will also strengthen our ties with China, ASEAN countries, and others to safeguard our people’s interests and the nation’s well-being,” he said.

Rubio arrived in Malaysia on Thursday to attend high-level meetings in conjunction with the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and related events.

This is also Rubio’s first official visit to Asia as Secretary of State since his appointment earlier this year.

He is representing the US at the ASEAN meetings, which are being held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from July 8 to 11.
