CHUKAI, July 9 (Bernama) – The Terengganu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) succeeded in trapping a female sun bear, estimated to weigh 40 kilogrammes, in Ladang Pelantoh Selatan, in Kijal near here today.
Its director, Loo Kean Seong said the wild animal had entered the trap that had been set by his team yesterday evening following a villager's complaint.
He said the bear had entered the trap at about 1 am and was released into its natural habitat today without any injuries.
"The bear had probably come out of a nearby forest reserve to look for food. Six Perhilitan staff handled the transfer of the wild animal to its natural habitat," he said when contacted today.
Meanwhile, a villager, Md Fauzi Abdullah, 42, said he lodged a report to Perhilitan at about 10 am yesterday after spotting the bear behind his house, adding that he was concerned for his young children.
"Early on Monday morning, I heard a noise near the jackfruit tree behind my house. After checking, I found a bear sitting on the tree.
"The next day, I immediately filed a report, and the Perhilitan staff came to set a trap at about 4 pm yesterday. Alhamdulillah, I was relieved when the bear was successfully caught," he added.
