KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- Tune Protect Group Berhad (Tune Protect) has entered into a strategic partnership with Sunway XFarms to launch the “Grow & Give” initiative, which aims to promote environmental sustainability and support underprivileged communities through sustainable farming practices utilising hydroponic methods.

In a statement today, Tune Protect announced that the sustainable farming initiative will be conducted in four sessions this year, in May, July, September, and November, with the participation of 240 company volunteers.

“Each session involves 60 employees who will contribute their time to assist the community in Medan Jaya, Petaling Jaya, home to over 4,000 people, many of whom have limited access to fresh and nutritious food.

“The initiative begins with hands-on training at Sunway XFarms, where Tune Protect employees learn about urban farming, harvest pesticide-free vegetables and pack them for distribution to the locals. They then apply this knowledge by establishing solar-powered community farms to produce low-impact food, providing long-term benefits to the community,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, Tune Protect’s chief strategy officer and Sustainability Committee chairman, Koot Chiew Ling, said that the initiative not only raises awareness but also shares practical solutions for clean energy, water efficiency, food security, and waste reduction with the community.

According to Koot, the programme is also an effort to foster genuine human connections, address basic needs and empower the public to take charge of their well-being.

“The smiles on the faces of the residents, the camaraderie among our employees, and the tangible outcomes, such as fresh local vegetables and a cleaner, safer environment, are a reminder that we can achieve great things when we are united in heart and purpose,” she said.

Koot said that driven by its sustainability vision of ‘In Tune for a Better Tomorrow’, Tune Protect is committed to building a more resilient future, with a target of contributing 6,000 volunteer hours between 2025 and 2027.

Meanwhile, Sunway XFarms chief operating officer Eleanor Choong said that inspiring urban communities and encouraging self-grown food are key priorities for the company, adding that it offers a variety of teaching methods to educate students of all levels and socio-economic backgrounds because access to nutritious food should be a right for everyone, not a privilege.

The community farm is projected to yield over 240 kilogrammes of fresh produce annually, providing residents with more than eight varieties of essential vegetables.

The sustainable solar-powered farm also significantly reduces environmental impact, preventing more than 1,500 square feet of deforestation, 3 tonnes of carbon emissions, 56 tonnes of water usage, and 960 pieces of plastic typically associated with conventional vegetable farming.
