MELAKA, April 28 (Bernama) -- Melaka managed to produce 50 tonnes of rice during the first harvest season, the Melaka State Legislative Assembly sitting was told today.
State Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh said that of the total, 5,000 bags of rice, each weighing 10-kilogramme (kg) and priced at RM26, were initially sold specifically to Malaysians.
“This is to ensure only Malaysians, particularly in Melaka, benefit from this special rice produced from the MR 297 paddy seed variety.
“To prevent leakage, Beras Melaka was initially sold only through agencies like the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) of Melaka through farmers' markets and Agro Bazaars under FAMA and not sold in supermarkets during the first season,” he said.
He was replying to a question from Leng Chau Yen (PH-Banda Hilir), who asked about ‘Projek Benih Padi Melaka’.
Muhamad Akmal said more Beras Melaka would be sold in the second season to meet public demand.
He added that although Beras Melaka is affordable, it has special qualities, namely the rice is more fragrant and not starchy.
