JAKARTA, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called on the people to remain calm and to continue placing their trust in the government in facing the country’s current developments.

Speaking at the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta on Sunday, he stressed that all political parties, both within and outside the ruling coalition, had agreed to continue championing the interests of the people.

“We are determined to always uphold the interests of the people, including the marginalised and underprivileged,” he said, according to a statement from the Presidential Secretariat.

Prabowo emphasised that he understood the aspirations expressed by the people and assured that every demand would be addressed accordingly.

He has instructed members of Parliament to hold dialogues with local leaders, university students and various civil society organisations.

“Members of Parliament are now in the process of revoking several decisions, including the increase in parliamentary allowances and the suspension of overseas working visits,” Prabowo said.

The measures taken by Prabowo’s administration follow a series of demonstrations in Jakarta that began on Monday before spreading to several provinces, protesting against the high parliamentary allowances amid economic hardship and the increase in taxes.
