NEW DELHI, May 14 (Bernama) -- At least 27 people were killed and many injured in a fire in western Delhi on Friday.

The Delhi police said 50 people were rescued from the fire that engulfed a four-storey building in the Mundka area.

Some people jumped off windows or used ropes to slide down the upper floors of the commercial building located near a metro rail station, local media reported.

More than 30 fire tenders were pressed into service to bring the fire under control, police said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which started on the first floor, but a municipal official suspected an electrical short circuit.

The incident was reported around 4.40 pm but its devastating impact became clear only at night when rescuers searched for survivors and bodies.

Dozens of injured people were taken to hospital.
