More than 400,000 krathongs collected after Loy Krathong Festival in Bangkok

BANGKOK, Nov 21 -- The workers of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) collected 403,235 krathongs (floating basket) after Friday’s Loy Krathong Festival.

In a statement, Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said workers picked up the krathongs from the Chao Phraya River, lakes at public parks and canals in Bangkok from 8 pm on Friday and finished at 5 am on Saturday.

“Of the total krathongs collected, 388,954 or 96.46 per cent were made of biodegradable materials while 14,281 or 3.5 per cent were non-biodegradable,” he said.

Aswin added that the krathongs made from natural materials will be sent to organic fertiliser plants at Nong Khaem Solid Waste Disposal Centre and On Nut Solid Waste Disposal Centre, while those made of foam materials will be sent to landfills.

“This year, the number of krathongs collected has reduced by 89,302 krathong or 18.13 per cent compared to last year,” noted Aswin.

A survey conducted by Bangkok Poll showed majority of the people did not plan to participate in Loy Krathong Festival this year, citing COVID-19 as concerns.

Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated during the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar.

The Thais participate in the festival and pay respect to the goddess of water by floating the decorated krathongs on lakes, rivers, canals and sea – believed to rid oneself of bad luck and negative feelings.
