Thailand’s home-grown COVID-19 vaccine to start production first quarter of 2022

19/11/2021 08:23 PM

BANGKOK, Nov 19 -- Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University is expected to start the production of its mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, ChulaCov19, in the first quarter of next year.

Head of the COVID-19 vaccine development project Dr Kiat Ruxrungtham said ChulaCov19 will enter its third phase of human trials, with jabs scheduled to be administered in the first quarter of 2022 as well.

He said an application will be filed with the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mid-next year for emergency use.

“If the vaccine registration is approved (by FDA), the research team is required to conduct fourth phase trials to gather information about the vaccine's safety and effectiveness from some 30,000 recipients,” he said, as quoted by Bangkok Post.

Meanwhile,  Kiat said the research team has begun developing the second generation of ChulaCov19.

He said the research team has started trials on mice, while trials on the vaccine’s effectiveness as booster dose is also being conducted.

In August, Kiat said ChulaCov19 vaccine generates immunity on par with the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccine and provides protection against the four major variants of COVID-19 – Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta.

Earlier this month, the Cabinet approved 2.32 billion baht (100baht = RM12.78) to support the development of the ChulaCov19 vaccine.
