BEIJING, Nov 21  -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil registered 38,397 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the nationwide tally to 6,020,164, the Ministry of Health said Friday.

Meanwhile, 552 more deaths from the virus were reported by the ministry, taking the death toll to 168,613.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico reported 6,426 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing its total confirmed cases to 1,025,969 with 100,823 deaths, the country's health ministry said.

The real number of cases is likely significantly higher than the official tally, according to the ministry.

URUMQI -- Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has been cleared of COVID-19 cases, the regional health commission said Saturday.

The region saw its numbers of confirmed and asymptomatic cases both drop to zero, with the last two asymptomatic cases in Kashgar released from medical observation on Friday, according to the commission.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong has moved to strengthen social distancing measures in response to a rebound in confirmed COVID-19 cases, with the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) describing the situation as "fairly severe."

The HKSAR government said in a statement Saturday morning that live performance and dancing will be suspended in catering premises, including bars and nightclubs, and party rooms for holding social gatherings will be closed.
