KEPALA BATAS, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- Thai skateboarders won both the Men's Street and Women's Street categories to steal the show on the final day of the four-day Skate Tour ASEAN (STA) Skateboarding League Championships at the Pokok Sena Skatepark here tonight.
Thai skateboarders swept to a 1-2-3 finish in the men's category, with 21-year-old Attapon Sampaokong emerging champion with 17.22 points, followed by 11-year-old Kirin Petkiree (just 0.2 points behind), and 25-year-old Chayakorn Wongwatanasopon (16.86 points).
The women's category saw two Thai youngsters excelling, with 10-year-old Chakao Unomphea coming out tops with 14.01 points and 14-year-old Vareeraya Sukasem (11.37 points) taking second spot. Indonesia's 12-year-old Quinara Ayra Darmawan came in third with 11.10 points.
Attapon, better known as Cube, was thrilled to finish first as he did not have high expectations coming into the championships.
"I'm excited and happy because I won tonight. This tournament allowed me to rectify my weaknesses and see for myself the capabilities of challengers from this region so that I can be prepared for the SEA Games in Thailand in December,” he told Bernama tonight.
Meanwhile, national skateboarder Nur Tia Adelisa Tajul Fuad, better known as Chicha, also attracted attention when she finished second in the Women's Park event with 4.73 points.
The 10-year-old Chicha said she learned a lot of new techniques and skills from the other skateboarders from the regional countries at the tournament.
"I will also join several other international meets to continue representing the country,” said Chicha, who has been skateboarding since she was three.
Singapore's Tina Wan YJ won the Women's Park event with 5.07 points while Malaysia's Adelia Haziqah Amirul Hisyam, 12, came in third with 3.61 points.
The inaugural edition of the STA attracted the participation of 74 skaters - 2 from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia and 42 from Malaysia - for the four main categories, namely Men's Street, Women's Street, Men's Park and Women's Park.
