USE OF VAR REQUIRES TIME TO BE IMPLEMENTED PROPERLY - KULJANAC

KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 (Bernama) -- The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system was tested out during the pre 2024/2025 Malaysia League (M-League) season match between Kuala Lumpur (KL) City FC and Negeri Sembilan FC yesterday ahead of the start of the season next month.

The system was managed by several local match officials who asissted referee Mohammad Zamzaidi Katimin throughout the 2024 Federal Territories Minister’s Cup at KL Football Stadium Cheras.

KL City secured a 2-1 victory, and the VAR played a crucial role at several key points of the match, including the second goal via a penalty converted by Paulo Josue in the 37th minute, and a red card for KL City’s new player Brendan Gan during the second half.

KL City head coach Miroslav Kuljanac commented on the use of VAR, saying that it was important but required time for it to be truly flawless as seen in the countries that initially adopted the system.

“In Croatia, I am familiar with VAR and the delay in getting the result is normal. The VAR system just needs time,” he said in a statement released by the Malaysian Football League today.

Meanwhile Negeri Sembilan FC captain Nasrullah Hanif was stoked that the VAR would be used in the upcoming season, as it would raise the quality of games.

“I hope the quality of refereeing for this season will also increase with the help of VAR,” he said.
