Terengganu knock down FT from second spot in the overall medal tally

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Boxing was the main focus on the penultimate day of the 20th Malaysia Games (Sukma) as Terengganu who dominated the boxing arena, knocked down Federal Territories from second place in the overall medal tally.

Terengganu took over the second spot from Federal Territories after accumulating 57 gold medals while Federal Territories slipped to third spot with 53 gold medals but Johor continued to rule supreme with 74 gold medals. 

In the boxing competition today, Amirul Hakim Sakila, Halim Izani Sulaiman and Wan Muhammad Haniff Wan Zahalan knocked out their respective opponents to add gold medals to the Terengganu contingent.

Held at the Precint 18 Futsal Complex in Putrajaya, boxers from Terengganu were instrumental in moving their contingent into second spot behind Johor.

Amirul Hakim proved too strong for Johor’s Muhammad Haizad Haiqal Johan in the men’s 57-60 kilogram (kg) lightweight while Halim Izani beat Sarawak’s Mohd Helmi Cheng Mohd Firdaus in the men’s Welterweight 63.5-67kg category.

Terengganu’s dominance continued when Wan Muhammad Haniff contributed another gold after defeating Johor’s M. Kaushal Mogan.

Meanwhile, at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras, Terengganu defeated Penang 2-0 to win the mother of all gold medals in the Sukma, their fourth Sukma gold medal throughout the Sukma.

Tomorrow,16 gold medals will be at stake, in boxing, badminton and lawn bowls.
