Indonesia Open: Another early exit for Liew Daren

24/11/2021 08:37 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24  -- National veteran men’s singles shuttler Liew Daren suffered another early exit after going down 14-21, 15-21 to sixth seed Jonatan Christie in the opening round of the Indonesia Open 2021 in Bali today.

Indonesian Jonatan will now face compatriot Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo in the next round. Chico had earlier disposed of teammate Henrikho Kho Wibowo 21-11, 21-18 at the Bali International Convention Centre, Nusa Dua.

This is Daren’s eighth early exit in nine outings this year, with his best achievement being a quarter-final appearance in the Thailand Open in January.

Meanwhile, national women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien staged a magnificent first-round fightback to defeat Indonesians Melani Mamahit-Tryola Nadia 15-21, 21-8, 21-10.

Vivian-Chiew Sien will take on third seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai next after the Thais received a first-round bye.

Malaysia’s other women’s doubles pair of Lee Meng Yean-Yap Cheng Wen also had a rough day at the office, having to slog for one hour and 19 minutes to oust Alexandra Boje-Mette Poulsen of Denmark 21-12, 19-21, 26-24.

It doesn’t get any easier for Meng Yean-Cheng Wen as they will now face fifth seeds Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva after the Bulgarians had defeated India’s Ashwini Ponnappa-Reddy N. Sikki 29-27, 21-18 earlier.

It was, however, the end of the road for Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair of Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See after they fell 18-21, 12-21 to Japanese third seeds Yuta Watanabe-Arisa Higashino.
