14/10/2021 03:43 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13  -- Eighteen years down the road, the national men’s senior hockey squad have finally reclaimed their world top-10 ranking after achieving promising results on their 2021 UK Tour Series.

The latest development was announced by Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal regarding current world rankings on the website of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) today.

“Earlier in the morning after we defeated Wales 3-1, hence as of today, Malaysia’s ranking has climbed to world No. 10. This is terrific news for Malaysia, especially for MHC.

“...because the last time we occupied a world top-10 berth was in late 2003,” he said at a media conference at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil here today.Tuesday’s triumph over Wales was the fourth test match and last of the tour series, which was preceded by a 4-3 win over the Welsh last Saturday (Oct 9), while prior to this, Malaysia were ranked world-11th after one win and one loss against Ireland.

In latest (Oct 13) FIH global rankings, Belgium are in top spot followed by Australia, India, Holland, Germany, England, Argentina, New Zealand, Spain and Malaysia to complete the best 10 teams in the world.

Subahan added that prevailing confidence points to Malaysia ending year 2021 in that top bracket and attempt to climb the ranks next year through test matches to collect more points.

He said the achievement by national coach A. Arulselvaraj in improving the country’s ranking deserves due recognition apart from proving the mercurial progress of the national squad.

“We are moving towards higher achievements and I am confident that on their return, they will wrap up preparations for the 2021 Asian Cup in December. We hope the national squad will do well at this men’s championship and collect point after point,” he said.

In a separate development, Subahan stated that the MHC Executive Board meeting has approved a RM10,000 allocation to every affiliate member including Royal Malaysian Police (Polis Diraja Malaysia) as well as Malaysian Armed Forces (Angkatan Tentera Malaysia) which will be disbursed this week.

He said the funding attests to MHC’s commitment to its affiliates to help member clubs and teams hold hockey events in their respective states.

“We welcome state hockey associations to host hockey activities whether it is a five-a-side carnival or indoor hockey or a league. God-willing, MHC will help with funding as pledged,” he said.
